Answers to the Questions.

  1. The “salt road” was built between Maloy’s Service Station and the Bluestone Quarry. Unfortunately, the composite did not hold up and the idea was relegated to the annals of history as a bold experiment that did not work.

  3. The central office of Bell Telephone was located in part of the present day Burhans-Crouse Funeral Home.
  4. The Sisters of Mercy were assigned to teach in 1887, and the Sisters of St. Joseph were assigned in 1895. They stayed until the school closed in 1964.
  5. Through the kindness of the Bunting heirs the Association was given a permanent right-of-way to the memorial which was dedicated in 1944.
  6. O’Neal A. Medore was born August 9, 1900, the son of Rocco and Elisa LaRove Medore. He died at the age of ninety-one on December 22,1991.
  7. The lodge was organized in 1873, and ten years later they built their hall on Speers Hill with twenty-three members. The lodge was active until 1978 when the building was torn down and members transferred to the Connellsville Lodge.
  8. Bartholomew “Beth” Warman was captured and spent several months in the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. The Society recently received a picture of Mr. Warman in his Civil War uniform along with his dog.
  9. Redding Bunting was not only a stagecoach driver but also a trusted agent, stage proprietor and tavern keeper.
  10. A public bath!
