The West Penn Railways journey to Dunbar Pennsylvania thru what was known as Bowest Siding, which had as many as three large wooden trestles which had to traverse The Pennsylvania, B & O and Western Maryland Rail lines to make its way into town. All that is remaining is finally located, due to the New Sheepskin Bike Trail which opened on May 29, 2008, a short spur route to the Great Allegheny Passage near Connellsville, PA. When biking from Connellsville to Ohiopyle it is worth your time to take a 2 mile side trip into the historical town of Dunbar.
Travel the 7 mile journey from South Connellsville PA on the Youghiogheny River, passing under the Great Allegheny Passage At Milepost 87, and paralleling the new Sheepskin Bike Trail spur opening May 29, 2008 running to Dunbar PA. Lots of History along this route, featuring remnants of the B & O, Western Maryland and Pennsylvania Mainline to Uniontown. Stop at the Dunbar Historical Society and learn when this small town had major manufacturing and the West Penn Railways trolley line running though it until 1952--a great side trip on your bike trail journey east to Ohiopyle PA this is part 1 --watch part 2 to Dunbar!
This is part two of a seven mile journey from South Connellsville PA to Dunbar, picking up at the Bowest Siding West Penn Railways, coming into Historic Dunbar PA. The new Sheepskin Railtrail, tieing into the Great Allegheny Passage is going to open May 29, 2008. It can be seen in this video.
